Discovered by Gottfried Kirch in 1702

Stars resolved by William Herschel in 1791

M5 consists of up to 500,000 stars and is located

around 24,500 light years away  and is 165 light

years across. M5 is estimated to be 13,000,000,000

years old, which is one the oldest known globular

 clusters associated with the Milkyway.
