NGC 1499 California Nebula Emission Nebula In constellation Perseus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The California Nebula is so named because it appears to resemble the outline shape of the California state. It was originally discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884. It is illuminated by the hot blue-white star (X1 Persei bottom left).
